Bodyboarding is widely recognised as one of the most intense watersports on the planet. Wherever you find waves that are too heavy for even the most hardcore of surfers, there you’ll find the boogers – screaming into dredging pits and scoring impossibly deep barrels. Born to Boogie: Legends of Bodyboarding is the first illustrated history of the sport and traces its evolution from 1971 to the present day.
The pioneers, the champions and the underground chargers are all profiled, among them Tom Morey, Pat Caldwell, Ben Severson, Jay Reale, Mike Stewart, Michael ‘Eppo’ Eppelstun, Guilherme Tamega, Andre Botha, Ryan Hardy, Damian King, Ben Player, Jeff Hubbard, Mitch Rawlins and Pierre Louis Costes. Born to Boogie tells the tale of how the sport was created, how it developed, flourished, faltered and fought back to become one of the most exciting extreme sports in the world today.
• Nine-times world champion Mike Stewart tells his incredible story:
from starting out as Tom Morey’s teenage protégé to becoming the greatest bodyboarder in the world.
• South African charger Andre Botha describes the day he survived the worst wipeout in contest history.
• Jeff Hubbard and pals recall how they launched the No Friends brand from a garage with just a fistful of dollars.
• Damian King talks about his troubled childhood and how his mother’s death inspired him to win a world title.
• Aussie innovator Michael ‘Eppo’ Eppelstun reveals how he perfected the ARS (air roll spin) and the backflip in 1993, and why he kept the latter secret for months.
Published by Orca Publications the book is filled with incredible stories spanning four decades and packed with iconic images, Born to Boogie is a must-have book for any bodyboarder.

A very successful weekend, be sure to check in and book up your place on the next weekend today!

We had a great turn out for the first classic bodyboard weekend of the year.

We where really lucky to score great weather for the whole weekend. Before we started we all sat and talked about different ability levels finding out what everybody wanted to get out of the weekend, whether it was wearing fins for the first time, catching more waves or busting there first roll.

2

The Saturday morning session consisted of video analysis in punchy 3ft Fistral. We had a range of abilities. We took the short walk down the beach in the sunshine and split the group on the beach, Sam went through rolls and spin technique for those more advance in the group and Rob took the others through using fins and catching their first white water waves.

5

The level of stoke was high after the first session spins and rolls had been landed and everyone had there fair share of waves, it was time for a big lunch and some video analysis.

The afternoon was a little smaller but there was still plenty of waves for the crew as the tide began to push in. Again we got a wide range of video footage from all the riders for reviewing after the surf. Noticeable improvements where starting to be made throughout the group and enthusiasm was high leading into our beach BBQ at the breaks down on Tolcarne. We had a good chat about the day over some food and a few beers whilst watching the sun set over the sea.

The waves where smaller on Sunday and there was a few new faces at the school in the morning as well as those from yesterday that where back for more! We made the call to go on a surf safari to find the best waves on the day. We ended up scoring some small but fun left hand wedges at Parrenporth in the morning, the crew worked on paddling to the peak and gaining down the line speed.

In the afternoon we took a trip up to Watergate the wind had come around but there was still some fun waves to have and the sun was still beating down on the more than keen bodyboarders. We finished the weekend with analyising the remaining video footage everyone had something to take away with them!

Overall it was a really fun weekend and some great progress was made throughout the group.

Posted by – June 3, 2013

We grabbed Found bodyboards  rider Tyler for a run down on his year so far, and what his plans are for the future.  You can see our full range of Found Bodyboards here.

2013 has been pretty sick been surfing loads, I took part in a few comps and picked up a couple of sponsors.

I have mainly just been surfing the south coast around my local area which has been really fun.

Picking up the sponsor with Found boards has made me focus on my surfing a lot too.

I have just finished school so now im looking forward to the summer this year to chill with friends and surf as much as I can when its on.

The plans for 2014 are just really getting into college and a few trips abroad.

I’m going to Hossegor at the end of August with a few friends and family to get waves which would be good but I want to travel further next year to

experience and see new things.

BODYBOARD-DEPOT GETS THE NOD FROM KING MIKE!

Posted by – April 29, 2013

It’s always nice to gain credibility from the best bodyboarder in the history of the earth. It was a great start to Monday morning when after hearing of the success of the Bodyboard-Depot / Science Demo day Mike Stewart sent us the following message. Thanks a lot Mike.

“We are extremely confident in the new Science board range and grateful for the opportunity to have given UK riders a chance to experience them at the Bodyboard-Depot board test day. A lot of work is involved in creating the best boards and I am confident in claiming our range as the best designed and made bodyboards in the world today. Thanks to those who took part, and I hope that the Spring swell is kicking in for you in the UK”

BODYBOARD FINS FOR THE EXTRA LARGE FOOT AVAILABLE AT THE BODYBOARD DEPOT!

Posted by – April 29, 2013

I can only imagine the difficulty in finding quality and comfortable foot wear with size 14 feet, let alone a decent pair of bodyboard fins!!

We surprisingly get more enquiries than you would think with guys in this retail nightmare! One such Man was a guy called Finian. He has very generously donated his time to write few words about his successful quest to find the perfect fitting fin! Read on below..

“I have been boarding for 10 years and in the last couple of years taken it much more seriously. My brother has lived in Penzance all his life and always said I should get some fins so I could come out to the parts of the beach that are not plagued by the ‘foam’ boarders.

At 6’6″ I know that some items for big guys are harder to come by, but I did not anticipate how long or hard my searching would be for size 14 fins, my Dad said I need not bother had big enough feet to act as fins!

After mailing guys as far out as Australia and America I came across the Bodyboard Depot, who provided me with a quick reply and very well received “yes we do”. Within a few days I had received a pair of limited Edition size 14 fins.

Two weeks later I was in the cold post winter waters in Sennen trying out my new improved limbs, so stoked and on a high that only being in the water with new fins could create.

I can catch anything with these and propel myself so much faster. They are a must have. I shall be gracing the black and white zones this year rather than tourist dodging.

Since I have gracefully hit some of the best sets of the spring swell to come in so far and a trip up to Porthcawl in Wales completely assured me of the need for fins to ride the best.

Cheers to Tom and the Depot for sorting me out, and all other big fellas needing fins stop here!

Finian”

CATCHING UP WITH: BODYBOARD-DEPOT TEAM RIDER LAURIE MCCALL

Posted by – April 27, 2013

The UK’s top DK rider, and Bodyboard-Depot team rider Laurie McCall has just returned from a winter of shredding in far off lands. We caught up with him to see what went down (clearly some shredding on the Knee!).

What have you been up to this winter?

The new year saw me going on a two month trip to New Zealand. I got to see some amazing places and escaped the worst of the English winter which was a bonus! The trip was less a surf trip and more a sightseeing/walking (Or tramping as the locals call it) trip. Walking up the mountains and around the sides of the South Island was unreal, postcard views wherever you look and the freshest air you’ll ever breath. I’d recommend it to anyone who likes to get back to nature haha.
After a couple of months of walking, hitchhiking and skipping from hostel to hostel in New Zealand I moved on to spend a month in Bali. It was my first time there (I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to get out there! (I’m now 26) and definitely won’t be my last. I was there just between the wet and the dry season meaning I got to surf a whole range of different spots depending on the winds.

Where did you get the best waves?

Probably at a spot near Keramas, east of Kuta. It was a dream for the knee, most waves consisted of a hollow barrel to whackable end section, could a drop knee er ask for more?

What did you get up to other than bodyboarding?

New Zealand was all about the wilderness walks and wildlife so a lot of my time was spent missioning up hills and stomping through bush and taking photos of the scenery. In Bali the local food was awesome so I was always on the hunt for a good eat (Ayam Betutu ended up being my favourite dish). A few nights were spent partying in Kuta, such a crazy place! Any days when the surf was flat I’d go off and explore the island on my scooter, it’s cool just driving through rural areas and seeing how different the culture and lifestyle is over there.

Why is Indo such a sick place to go on a bodyboarding trip?

Apart from the obvious abundant selection of world class waves, the water is bath warm (It makes such a difference riding without a wetsuit), the food is good and cheap! The local people are super friendly and always smiling, it’s all good, just be careful if you’re on a scooter out there, the roads are a death trap!

What are you up to now that you’re back?

I’m working freelance as a graphic designer which is rad, I get to choose my own hours and work from my studio which is a dream come true. I’m just about to start designing a new clothing range for the Bodyboard-Depot, so watch this space! I’m also practicing art which has a been a hobby of mine for a while, I mostly work in collage using found images and paper which I have been hoarding for the past few years! You can see some of my work here –

What are your plans for summer and autumn 2013?

Surf as much as I can, I’m going to try and get over to Hossegor in the Autumn for some beachie shacks. Other than that i’ll be working to build up my client base for my freelance work and doing as much art as I can, I’d like to see if i can get my work into some galleries and publications.

You were at the Science Demo day, what did you think of it?

I thought it was a really good idea. It was good to compare a whole load of different boards all in a short space of time. The turnout was impressive and it’s promising to see so many groms frothing to get in there! The future is bright!

Can you come up with captions for each of your shots please to let us know what’s going on?

Found Leashes, a revolutionary new product – UK Launch!

Posted by – April 25, 2013

The world’s most cutting edge bodyboard company, Found Bodyboard’s are set to launch their awesome new leash to the UK market this May.

Mitch Rawlins, the company owner and the world’s most popular rider, has simply taken the best aspects of the other top leashes on the market and gone a stage better.
The bicep leashes have a similar look to a Gyroll; the coil is tightly wound to stay out of the way with a single brass swivel. The big difference is the way that it performs though. Not only does it stay out of the way, but also it stays coiled even after the heavy wipeouts. After rigorous testing from Mitch he sent the sample leashes over to the UK for Rob Barber and The Bodyboard-Depot team to try;

“We decided to use a three tiered testing regime” Commented Barber. “The plan was to use it in the UK and internationally and by riders of three different ability levels as those that wipe out more can test the leashes recoil and longevity while the top end riders could be hyper-sensitive about the leashes drag, ability to tangle when paddling and the comfort of the bicep pad”.

The leashes were tested in the winter UK swells as well as on bodyboard coaching holidays to Morocco, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. And free surfing trips to the Canaries.

The leash showed excellent results, each level of rider agreed that it was the best leash that they have used and better still, during wipe outs it didn’t damage the board at all as other leashes had done in the past.

The stylish logo inside the bicep pad and quality flat topped plug scream quality.

The leashes will retails for £22.99 and be available at The Bodyboard-Depot, Bodyboard HQ and BigSurf.ie from early May

Sam Bishop, 21, Shrewsbury, Bodyboard-School Instructor
Tested in UK, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Fuertevenura, Gran Canaria and Morocco
“The found leash has to be the best leash I’ve ever used, even after heavy wipeouts its strong coil stays tight and out of the way allowing me to feel more confident inthe surf”

Ash Hughes, 27, Birmingham-Policeman
Tested in UK, Morocco, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote
“As I train in the gym and have a larger arm than average I have struggled to find a comfortable bicep leash, however, after using this leash there is no need for me to look any further.  This leash is awesome, stays tightly coiled and has never felt like snapping.”

Rob Barber, 36, Newquay, Bodyboard-Depot / School / Holidays Director
Tested in UK, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Morocco
“Great fit, stayed tightly coiled and out of the way and didn’t damage my board. I won’t use another leash from this point onwards”

FOUND LEASHES £22.95

AVAILABLE IN THE UK FROM MID APRIL FROM THE BODYBOARD-DEPOT
